MEC's commitment to sustainability and the natural environment includes green building and selecting innovative mass timber products as the primary building material for its new head office. Glue laminated timber beams and columns, joined and braced with steel fittings, make up the building structure and the floor assemblies are made of prefabricated nail-laminated timber (NLT) panels. The avoided and sequestered greenhouse gases from the wood used in the building is equivalent to removing 1,030 cars off the road for a year. The total carbon dioxide equivalent avoided by using wood products over other materials in the building is more than 5,393 metric tonnes. The success of this project has demonstrated that solid wood systems and mass timber products can be used as the structural building material for non-residential and commercial buildings.
