Did you know that there are websites where more than 150 companies are tracking your every move? Or that when you're logged in on facebook and you go to an 'adult website', Facebook could still be tracking you? Online privacy is one of those things you hear about, you know about - but what does this exactly mean? IntoConnection to the rescue! We are about to enlighten you about this difficult issue. Ghostery We invited an expert from Ghostery, Jib Hunt. Ghostery is a free extension that you can add on your Google Chrome (for the internet noobs, this is an extension). So what does this extension do? It shows you a list companies are tracking you per website. On the right you can see the companies that are tracking you. After that you'll get the option of turning certain companies 'on' and 'off'. Ghostery believes that you need to know what kind of website you're on and this is one of the best tools to clear this up. Things you didn't know When you log in to Facebook (for example) and go to another website that has a tiny little Facebook plugin at the bottom or somewhere, Facebook is tracking you. Same with Google, as soon as you log in on your Gmail, it's tracking everything. Ghostery tells us that they've come across websites that had between 100 and 120 trackers on their homepage. A lot of companies are getting your information without consent and using data in a way that they shouldn't (besides that, a website that has a 100 trackers, really slows down your internet experience). What exactly is the problem with tracking? So what if advertisements everywhere are adjusted to your taste - that's okay right? If you like snowboarding, it's okay to get snowboard ads. But it's something that has to be your choice, and not the one of the company that is tracking you. Not completely clear to you yet? Maybe if we introduce some pizza you will understand: The future Since our data is becoming more and more important for companies, there are ideas of making your own data to become a payment. So the more access you give a website to track what you're doing, the more you can do or see on that particular website. Our vlogger Jib believes that this might be what we're heading for, as long as those companies are being clear about what they're tracking and users understand what they are giving up. He believes that companies should be honest, so people can be okay with giving data as long as they can feel that they can trust them.
