Everyone should practice self-recovery so they know what to expect when (not if) the kayak flips over. Given the difficulty in recovering this model of a kayak, practice is even more important. In this video, I test the flip line technique as well as use body weight to right the kayak. This video is a follow-up to my earlier video where I installed additional flotation in the Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 to make is possible to recover. I welcome thoughtful comments from experts on how to recover this model. As you can see in the video when righted, the water is over the gunwales and, without the additional flotation I installed in the earlier video, is impossible to bail. I asked Native on Facebook for guidance on how to self-recover and they responded, "Getting back into the boat like the ultimate is next to impossible due to the fact as you mention... it fills up with water." It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur at random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide, before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. In addition, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade. The bottom line is that you must make your own judgment in terms of acceptable behavior and risk and not rely on the opinions expressed here.
