Should you still do rank tracking? http://www.seoacademy.net/ Transcription: Hi and welcome. My name is Harald Tschuggnall from SEOAcademy.net, and today I want to talk about rank tracking. Should you still do rank tracking? Some people say you should stop doing rank tracking, others say you should still do rank tracking, so what is the answer? I can just give you some of the insights I have or I can just tell you how we do it or how we handle it, and I think rank tracking is still quite important. Because back in the years, back two or three years ago, we used to get keyword data in Google Analytics from SEO, so it was much easier, basically, to see where's the traffic coming from and so on. Of course you can still go and see the landing pages and some how try to figure out which keyword have been actually driving traffic and for this, you actually need to know which keywords are ranking. This would be the first point why I would recommend to still do tracking keywords or rank tracking. Of course, these days, it's different. You have got different locations, you have got different devices, and so on, so what would be important if you do rank tracking is that you have got of course, your list of keywords inside and then also try to make some keyword packets, I mean by that not just track the exact keywords that you have in mind, it would be also good to have some kind of related keywords or some long tail keywords and stuff like that and actually it's quite good to use other tools, not just rank tracking tools, also use tools like I would say Sistrix or Search Metrics, where you actually see the SEO visibility, but below the SEO visibility, you also get very nice keyword data. They also tell you your ranking for this term, this term, that term, and you have got some additional keyword data where you can really see that you're ranking for 600 or 1,000 more keywords and you can dig into that pool of keywords and see "Okay, ah, I'm also ranking for this, I'm also ranking for that, I'm also ranking for this." This would be quite important for you to know that you're also ranking for this kind of keywords, and if you find important keywords there or a keyword that drives some traffic to you, then just put it in your regular keyword tracking. In keyword tracking, now we have different devices, so you have to actually track the desktop rankings and then you have to track the mobile rankings, because they are very different. Then we have personalized search, we have got different locations, so it's really not very easy anymore. If you want to set it up really right, you need a lot of cred so you actually need a lot of budget to do that. If a company wants to rank locally in some cities, in five or six cities, you basically need to setup a local rank tracking and of course I would also suggest to do tracking for the different devices. Why is that important? I wouldn't do any rank tracking without a goal. You need to know, okay, you're rank tracking, but actually what are you going to do if the rankings go up or down? Most of the time, of course, you'd have to do or you have to be, should be quite fast, if the rankings go down or if the SEO visibility, the SEO visibility would be a pool of keywords that you are tracking and best would be to have some tools if you put in your keywords, then you will have your own so to say, SEO visibility and if this visibility is dropping, you need to know what to do. This is why actually keyword tracking is still quite important, because then actually you see what is going on, and you would see, "Okay, oh, I'm having a technical issue now," or "I see I am not ranking in this city any more because two new competitors came in, so I have to do something over there." Or see sub-direct some keyword, 10, 15 keywords are not ranking anymore, that's because a sub-directory is not ranking anymore, and that's because the technical guys, I don't know, they messed up they set everything to no-index, or the page is a 404 page and stuff like that. It's really important to know what is going on on your website, and to track at least your most important keywords to get an alert whenever something is going wrong, because this could be a lot of money that you're losing if you're not ranking for your most important keywords anymore. This is my suggestions, I would still suggest to track rankings, but of course, use it as metric but there are also other metrics out there. It's still important to know if you're losing rankings for a certain keyword or a pool of keywords. I hope that that was useful and I'll see you tomorrow. Bye bye.
