Registered Dietician Suzzette Rodriguez breaks down key nutrition points of the Branch Chain Amino Acid leucine. Leucine is an essential branch chain amino acid. Together with valine and Isoleucine they make up 1/3rd of muscle protein. Leucine is not naturally produced in the body. It is utilized in the liver adipose tissue and muscular tissue. Studies have shown that leucine increases protein synthesis in the muscles, that it improves metal and physical performance, and conserves glycogen in the muscle. Natural Sources of leucine include eggs, fish, dairy, chicken, and beef. For vegetarians they include kidney beans, tofu, and some dark-leafy greens. High doses can stimulate muscle protein synthesis due to insulin stimulation and inhibited protein breakdown. Leucine is more readily broken down and used for energy compared to other amino acids. Consumption of branch chained amino acids containing 30 to 35 percent leucine before or during exercise have shown to improve metal and physical performance and decrease depletion of muscle glycogen stores.
