The Guardian newspaper's recent revelation that the US government has a program called PRISM that allows analysts at the National Security Agency to extract the details of customer activities, including "audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents" and other materials -- from computers at Microsoft, Google, Apple and virtually every social media site has prompted US officials to fired back saying it is all within the law and that these surveillance activities have helped foil terrorist attacks. 29 year old Edward Snowden has stepped forward revealing his identity as the individual who blew the lid off these clandestine surveillance programs in an interview with the Guardian. He's a former technical assistant for the CIA and has been working at the National Security Agency for the past four years. Until Monday morning he had been hiding in a hotel in Hong Kong in preparation for the expected fallout from his disclosures, however according the hotel staff, he has since checked out. Snowden said that the NSA's reach poses "an existential threat to democracy." While supporters have called Snowden a national hero, Calls for his prosecution by US officials came shortly after his identity was made public. Rep. Peter King, the chairman of a House Homeland Security subcommittee and a member of the Intelligence Committee said in a statement "If Edward Snowden did in fact leak the NSA data as he claims, the United States government must prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law and begin extradition proceedings at the earliest date." Snowden told the Guardian "I do not expect to see home again," acknowledging the risk of imprisonment over his actions. "You can't come up against the world's most powerful intelligence agencies and not accept the risk," The paper notes that Snowden will go down in history as one of America's most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg who leaked the Pentagon papers 4 decades ago and Bradley Manning who disclosed information to Wikileaks and is currently standing trial. Stand up: Despite Snowden determination to reveal his identity he has repeatedly insisted that he wants to avoid the media spotlight and instead asked the media to focus on the actions of the US government. http://www.presstv.ir/
