Close up of PIA poster STORYLINE: Passengers heading from Pakistan to the United States were facing increased security checks on Monday, following US requests for enhanced screening after a failed attack by a Nigerian passenger on a flight bound for Detroit. The US Transportation Security Administration said people flying into the US from countries such as Nigeria, Yemen, Pakistan, Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria are to face the extra screening, which is likely to annoy passengers already facing intrusive security screening. The extra security measures were apparently already in place, although journalists were not permitted to go air-side inside the terminal to observe them. Pakistani International Airways spokesman Sultan Hassan said that special arrangements had been made for all US-bound passengers. "We received a circular from the US government that they want the passengers to be checked once all over again before boarding the plane," Hassan said. Hassan said that US-bound passengers would be segregated in a special lounge, and subjected to further body searches and hand-luggage screening before boarding aircraft. Hassan also said a special team of PIA security officials would be responsible for the extra passenger searches. Over the weekend, PIA published advertisements in local newspapers to warn prospective passengers of the increased safety measures. Although there are no direct flights from Pakistan to the US, PIA operates a flight which stops in the UK en route. At Islamabad international airport some Pakistani passengers objected to the new security measures. Iqbal Zafar claimed that Pakistanis were treated well in Australia, New Zealand but not in the US. Several airlines operate out of Pakistan with onward connections to destinations in the US, including Emirates, Thai, Etihad and Qatar Airlines. The new measures follow the arrest of Nigerian citizen Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who allegedly tried to set off an explosive device on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day. Abdulmutallab has told US investigators he received training and instructions from al-Qaida operatives in Yemen. Pakistan''s border with Afghanistan is a key battleground in the US-led battle against al-Qaida and the Taliban.
